BIOLOGICAL AND FEEDING ACTIVETIES OF THE PINK CORN BORER, SESAMIA CRETICALED.TREATED BY PLANT EXTRACTS

چکیده
Background: Maize plants are infested with many insect pests. The corn borer, namely: the greater sugarcane borer (the pink borer), Sesamia cretica Led. is one of most injurious insects infesting maize in Egypt and all over world. Results: Results illustrated that mortality percentage within 48 hours S. after feeding 4th instar larvae on leaves treated various plant extracts alcohol or petroleum- ether shows varying degrees percentages. Petroleum extract Cressa was extremely effective, causing 87.5% mortality. Amborosia maritima, Calotropis procera, C. cretica, 77.5% effectiveness may be due to presence diverse chemical groups these toxic borer. On other hand, Lycopersicum esculentum, Lotus glenoid, Aerva javanica, Carpobrotus edulis, Capsium annum, Cassia senna have been minimum effect 7.5, 10.0, 12.5, 12.5 % mortality, respectively. influence minimal as antifeedant (S. cretica) studied. Food consumption varied depending time tested. ratio different significantly different. anti-feeding activity appears had a higher than its toxicity.

Courtship and mating behaviour of the Mediterranean corn borer, Sesamia nonagrioides (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)
The behavioural sequence of courtship and mating of Sesamia nonagrioides Lefèbvre males and females in laboratory cages is described. The attractant capacity of both sexes was studied by tethering males or females. The courtship and mating sequence of tethered females was the same as untethered ones, but tethered males were absolutely inactive. Age (1 day versus 2 days) did not affect the matin...
متن کاملHost location behaviour of gravid females in the Mediterranean corn borer Sesamia nonagrioides: external morphology of antennae and ovipositor sensilla
The behaviour of gravid females of Sesamia nonagrioides (Lefebvre) during host plant location in a wind tunnel is described using an ethogram and compared with unmated females, males and gravid females deprived of antennae. The sequence of behaviours exhibited by the majority of the intact gravid females began with a resting period followed by the unfolding of the antennae towards the plant plu...
متن کاملToxicity and mode of action of Bacillus thuringiensis Cry proteins in the Mediterranean corn borer, Sesamia nonagrioides (Lefebvre).
Sesamia nonagrioides is one of the most damaging pests of corn in Spain and other Mediterranean countries. Bt corn expressing the Bacillus thuringiensis Cry1Ab toxin is being grown on about 58,000 ha in Spain. Here we studied the mode of action of this Cry protein on S. nonagrioides (binding to specific receptors, stability of binding, and pore formation) and the modes of action of other Cry pr...
متن کاملA potential and novel type transgenic corn plant for control of the Corn Borer
The corn borer is a world-wide agricultural pest. In this study, a full-length neuropeptide F (npf) gene in Ostrinia furnacalis was sequenced and cloned from a cDNA library, in which the npf gene produces two splicing mRNA variants - npf1 and npf2 (with a 120 bp segment inserted into the npf1 sequence to generate npf2). A spatio-temporal expression analysis showed that the highest expression le...
متن کاملSystematics and biology of Cotesia typhae sp. n. (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Microgastrinae), a potential biological control agent against the noctuid Mediterranean corn borer, Sesamia nonagrioides
Many parasitoid species are subjected to strong selective pressures from their host, and their adaptive response may result in the formation of genetically differentiated populations, called host races. When environmental factors and reproduction traits prevent gene flow, host races become distinct species. Such a process has recently been documented within the Cotesia flavipes species complex,...
